Junior Campers and the Reading Program (a.m. only)
Campers read for 30 minutes daily in groups with a qualified reading teacher. Children are grouped by reading level. This program is designed to bring children together to enjoy leveled books, develop their oral language and practice early reading strategies.

Because Junior Campers are very young, many come to camp the summer before beginning Junior Kindergarten. If we have a camper registered who has not attended school, and we have not received an indication that he or she can read, we will automatically start this child at the pre-reading level on the first day of camp. The reading teacher would introduce concepts about print, discuss the pictures in the book, and teach the children in the group how to read a story with one or two predictable words on a page using the picture as the primary source of information and building from there.

If your child has already been in school and you know that he or she is a non-reader, a beginning reader or advanced for his/her age, please let us know. We'll do our best to group him or her for the first day and make adjustments where necessary to keep everyone challenged, yet comfortable and having a great time reading together! We can mix junior campers with older campers for just the reading period. If your child is a highly advanced reader, please let us know if it is your priority to have him or her challenged in reading, or with same-aged peers for that 30 minute block of time. This will assist us in determining reading group placement.

Helpful information might include if English is the second language, or if there are speech / language issues. Here's how you can let us know about your child's reading (optional).

1) Make a note on their Form #2 Registration Form.
2) Print the Reading Level Form and submit it to his or her teacher. You need to sign this yourself, giving the teacher your consent to email us a reading level. This form can be found under the registration link with the other registration forms. It is optional, and may not apply to children of preschool age. It was designed with school - aged children in mind.
3) Email us at reading@wrkcamps.com . Please include your child's full name and age, and which week(s) he or she will be attending camp.

Our campers will bring home a list of 'The Books I Read At Camp', and those books marked with an asterisk * on their lists can be downloaded from readinga-z should parents choose to subscribe.

The main goal, especially at this young age, is to develop enthusiasm and a feeling of success that will give a child a positive attitude towards books, reading and learning to last a lifetime!
